Examples of Citizen Journalism

How to define citizen journalism?

The common words in the definitions are “participatory” and “citizens” … but others (in particular, Shirky) talk about “acts of journalism.”  These “acts” of journalism are enabled by social web technologies, as embodied in websites such as Flickr, YouTube, WordPress, Blogger, Wikipedia. Note: there are technologies, then websites built upon those technologies, then “objects” that provide the content for the website. “Acts of journalism” can also be similar to the development of open source software: crowdsourcing as journalism (Rosen).

In a nutsheel, “citizen journalism” differs from “traditional” journalism in that anyone (this is the democratizing and disintermediating bit) can access the tools embodied on the websites … whereas it takes a lot of capital to establish even a small-town newspaper or radio/TV station. This isn’t a definition — it’s a comparison.

Examples from 2007 class:

  • Ashley (2007) Informed Students
I believe that this is a great example of citizen journalism because college students are going to be the next generation running the country. They also do not have the extensive experience of professional journalists, so they are citizen journalists at their finest because they are learning the ropes now. Also, by discussing and being informed on important topics and issues, they are proving that citizen journalism can be a positive and credible source of information and conversation.
  • Blythe (2007) The video taken on a UCLA student’s cell phone of campus police tasering an Arab student in the UCLA library.
  • Colleen (2007) Ohmynews.com
  • Justin (2007) PI Blog (is this really “citizen” journalism?)
