Week 4 Notes – Th
Citizen Journalism
Discussion Leaders: Student Assignments 3, 4
In-Class Group Work: Individually, review the summary of the presidential campaign project. In small groups, discuss. Summarize discussion (one comment per group on group project page): how might we select 13 candidates … expand the possible list of in-depth articles … develop a list of criteria for evaluating candidate’s use of the web and social media … any other thoughts/ideas on the project. We will begin work on this next week.
In-Class Assignment: Based on reading and discussion, blog (to WordPress) your “definition” of citizen journalism. Hypothesize about what it might look like in two years (post November 2008). Provide an example (from class, from your exploration of the blogosphere) that you think is good citizen journalism; tell us why.
Grades: First Newsvine column graded; seeds and comments recorded. It’s important to make sure all Newsvine writing is posted to UW Bloggers & Public. Student ID – last six digits. Folder requires UW login. (pdf)
Readings due Tuesday! Student reading assignments 5, 6, 7, 8. We’ll do two each day.
